Merzouga
Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi — Morocco's largest sea of dunes, rising 150 metres above the southeastern Sahara. This is where camel caravans still trace the old salt routes and where Berber families host travellers under canvas pavilions wired with solar light.
Things to do in Merzouga
Erg Chebbi sunrise climb
Reach the high ridge by 6am for the moment the dunes turn from violet to molten copper.
Khamlia Gnaoua music night
Listen to descendants of West African caravans play sintir lutes in their village hall.
Dayet Srji salt lake
Migratory flamingos and desert larks gather here between February and April.
Luxury desert camp stay
Sleep in heated wool tents with proper beds, hot showers, and a private fire pit.
October to April is the sweet spot — daytime 22–28°C, nights cool but never freezing. Avoid June–August (45°C+) and the late-March sandstorm window.
Fly into Marrakech (RAK) or Fes (FEZ). It's a 9–10 hour drive across the Atlas from either city — most travellers split the journey over a 3-day route via Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Gorges and Tinghir.
Merzouga travel FAQ
How many days do I need in Merzouga?
A minimum of one overnight in the desert. Two nights lets you slow down — one in a camp, one back in a Merzouga riad.
Is Merzouga safe for solo travellers?
Yes. The region is calm, guides are licensed, and women travel solo here regularly. Book through a verified operator.
Camel trek or 4x4 to the camp?
Camel is the cinematic choice (90 minutes at sunset). 4x4 is faster and better for travellers with back issues or young children.
